COMPONENT DESIGN FOR ASSEMBLY
After the final concept presentation, MWDesign will focus on the approved product concept. This will be done primarily through 3D CAD modelling. We will further development the CAD models into precise components incorporating all features from the final concept design. The objective is to develop the design to allow us to create a prototype for testing, before investing in tooling.
Focusing on individual part components, MWDesign will refine the components and design out the cost to enable us to maintain quality while meeting our budget cost. We will begin engineering the parts for the product, focusing on functional aspects of the design.

The Refinery Sapphire Ring
CAD Design & Resin Print for Casting
Nick Cowley from The Refinery came to MWDesign with a basic sketch for a ring.
MWDesign was able to 3D model the ring in Solidworks, using the sketch as a base to CAD the form to tight tolerances and dimensions, provided for the gemstones to sit into.
Once the CAD was finished, MWDesign 3D printed the ring using our Form Resin Printer. The printer uses Stereolithography (SLA) technology, using a light source—a laser or projector—to cure liquid resin into hardened plastic. This produced a high accuracy part with fine features and smooth surface finish, ready for casting.
We then passed the resin ring over to The Refinery, who used it to investment cast the gold ring base.
He then inlaid the diamonds and central sapphire, to complete the finished ring.
